    Dundalk Urban Design Framework Plan

    KSA were selected by RUDI (Resource for Urban Design Information) to provide a case study on the Dundalk Urban Design Framework Plan (completed by KSA in 2008) for the recently-published Placemaking 2009. RUDI is the largest web resource dedicated to urban design and placemaking, including undertaking studies and research and providing best practice examples and advice to professionals in the public and private sector. Placemaking 2009 is the second annual publication showcasing the best professional practice and case studies in improving living and working environments for all – making better places.

    KSA were appointed by Dundalk Town Council to prepare an Urban Design Framework Plan that would actively influence change in the quality of future development and the design of urban spaces in Dundalk. The project brief arose from a desire to seize the opportunities presented by new development for the positive enhancement of the town centre, while focussing activity and retailing in the town centre and retaining the fine Victorian core with its many original shopfronts.

    The Aims of the Urban Design Framework Plan (a 20-year strategy) are as follows:

    •  To develop Dundalk as a DESTINATION OF CHOICE for visitors;
    •  To REINFORCE THE HEART of the town and create DISTINCT IDENTITIES within its centre;
    •  To provide a ROBUST STRUCTURE which is FLEXIBLE enough to respond to changing retail, commercial and social trends;
    •  To give Dundalk a MORE ROUNDED town centre and bring it to LIFE in the evenings and at weekend by the introduction of a broader MIX OF USES;
    •  To create a network of QUALITY PUBLIC SPACES and a LEGIBLE PUBLIC REALM;
    •  To improve ACCESS FOR PEOPLE in and around the town centre whilst retaining ease of access for all modes of transport such as buses, cyclists and cars;
    •  To PRESERVE AND CONSERVE the town’s architectural conservation areas and its protected and historic structures;
    •  To ENHANCE SHOPFRONTS and building facades within the town centre.

    These aims will be achieved through the detailed design guidelines developed specifically for each of the seven identified character areas within the town, and through the conservation strategy and shopfront design guidance provided for the town centre area.
